Language Arts Curriculum Kindergarten with Logic of English Foundations

I was looking for a language arts curriculum for kindergarten, and I really wanted to try Logic of English (LOE) Foundations for several reasons. This complete language arts curriculum includes everything you need from learning-to-read to grammar to handwriting. The ease of teaching an all-in-one program appealed to me, as did the structured approach to building a foundation for reading.

After taking a placement test, my son fit right into Level A at age 5, kindergarten. In the following year-end review post, I’ll share our experience with Logic of English Foundations Level A and explain how and why it was an excellent choice for our family.

Logic of English Foundations Info

The Foundations program has four levels, A-D, and is targeted to kids between the ages of 4-7. They offer a placement test to help you figure out where your child should start. Logic of English Foundations is a full language arts program, with reading, grammar, writing, vocabulary, spelling, and handwriting. Each level is designed to be used for a half year to a full year of instruction. You may use one or two levels a year, depending on your child’s needs and how you’d like to pace it.

A Solid Language Arts Curriculum for Kindergarten

Below are my top three reasons Logic of English Foundations stands out as a language arts curriculum for kindergarten.

Researched Instruction Methods

Firstly, Logic of English follows a systematic instruction and is Orton-Gillingham-based. Orton-Gillingham is a well-researched type of instruction developed to help kids with dyslexia. However it can really benefit all kids by helping them develop a strong foundation in reading. I think this approach is especially good in a one-on-one homeschool setting, where the parent-teacher needs a supportive curriculum with a good amount of structure in order to deliver consistent, thorough instruction.

Focus on Decoding, Not Memorizing Sight Words

Secondly, Logic of English takes a different approach to teaching reading than many other programs. There’s less memorization of sight words and more emphasis on learning all of the phonemes right up front. Therefore, this method is great for kids who struggle with memorization. Your child will begin decoding words right away but without the pressure of having to memorize dozens of sight words to read. Kids get the practice they need to learn phonemes without a lot of drill and kill and memorization.

Hands-On Learning

While learning all of the phonemes at once may seem like a big task for a little kid, LOE makes it easy with lots of hands-on activities. Kids learn phonemes through word building, card games, and crossing over phonics into all areas of language arts instruction to really reinforce each skill. So finally, the focus on hands-on learning makes this a strong program that will feel engaging to a variety of kids. This was especially great for us because I could set my kindergartener and second grader up to play together and it helped them both practice.

What Makes LOE Stand Out as a Strong Language Arts Curriculum for Kindergarten?

Logic of English Foundations is a strong learn-to-read and language arts program. I enjoyed using it with my kindergartner, and he found the lessons and hands-on activities engaging and fun. However, there’s more to it than that!

LOE provides a complete, comprehensive language arts program that helped me keep homeschooling simple in kindergarten. This all-in-one type of format saved me time, and helped keep my son’s attention. Plus, the Teacher’s Edition did a fantastic job of providing support and integrating learning to read into every area of language arts. Lessons run smoothly, and I felt that I had all of the support I needed to teach my child.

Keeping Kindergarten Language Arts Curriculum Simple

Firstly, Logic of English is great for families who want to keep things simple. This is why I originally chose LOE for my kindergartener. I didn’t want to buy a different program for each facet of language arts. LOE Foundations is a complete program that includes phonics, spelling, and phonemic awareness; reading, comprehension and vocabulary; writing, grammar, and handwriting.

This is one program that covers all your bases. This reason, by itself, makes Foundations very appealing. As a working mom with three kids, I really need curriculum that makes teaching easy. Logic of English does that.

A Complete Language Arts Curriculum for Kindergarten will Save Valuable Time

When you’re using one language arts curriculum for kindergarten to cover everything, you can streamline learning time. Transitioning from one program to another takes time and you can sometimes lose your kid’s attention during that transition time. 

Multiple programs also take a lot of organization on your part, especially in trying to make sure you’re getting to things consistently. With LOE, if you work out a pace and stay consistent with instruction – just doing the next lesson or activity in the teacher’s edition – you know that you’ve covered your bases.  

On the program’s website, you can find specific ways to adjust the pace and scheduling to fit the needs of your child and family. LOE helps with recommendations for how to adjust the pace, so you can move more quickly or slower through the material. So in one day, you may be doing a partial lesson and then playing the game on the next day, or if your child is zooming through, you may be consistently covering a full lesson each day.

Excellent Guide for the Parent-Teacher

Finally, the teacher’s manual does a great job of combing the subjects. For example, you may introduce a new phoneme through handwriting and spelling. You may later take these new words that your kid can now read and spell and use them in context for reading comprehension or gain a deeper meaning through a vocabulary game. Later, you may put together a mini-book that reinforces the phoneme skill and practices fluency at the same time. 

For example, your kindergartener will be learning the phonemes for the letter g – /g/ and /j/ while also learning to write the letter g and reading simple sentences with g words.

I had one reader reach out to me about earlier in the year. She said that reading through the description of the program felt like a LOT. So yes, there are a lot of components to this program. However, you won’t be doing every single subject in isolation every day – which is where you can end up if you’re piecing together different programs.

Recommendations for Logic of English Foundations

I recommend Logic of English Foundations to parents who want the ease of a single, complete package. It’s best for kids who are learning reading, writing, and handwriting simultaneously.

LOE can be tricky if you have a kid who is greatly struggling in one area. For example, sounding out words and spelling, but has already mastered handwriting, writing out sentences, and higher level comprehension. At that point, LOE could become too complete of a program. You would want to consider a learn-to-read or phonics program that’s separate from the rest of your language arts curriculum.

However, if you have a child who is more-or-less learning at a consistent pace – whether that’s on target with their age-level peers or a bit behind, LOE might be the right fit for your family.
